Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh died last night. He was admitted to Delhi AIIMS after his health deteriorated at around 9 pm. Where he breathed his last at the age of 92. Dr. Manmohan Singh was ill for a long time. On hearing the news of his death, there was an atmosphere of mourning across the country and PM Modi expressed condolences by tweeting. At the same time, BJP leader JP Nadda immediately reached Delhi AIIMS and met the family members. Manmohan Singh in politics
Manmohan Singh was a Rajya Sabha MP and retired from Rajya Sabha on 3 April this year. He reached Rajya Sabha for the first time in 1991 from Assam and remained a Rajya Sabha member for 33 consecutive years. He last became a Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan in 2019.
Life
He was born on 26 September 1932 in Gah, Punjab in undivided India. Which is now in Pakistan. His father was Gurumukh Singh and mother was Amrit Kaur. After the partition of the country, his family came to India and he completed his graduation and post graduation from Punjab University. After this, he did PhD from Cambridge University and D.Phil from Oxford University. He was also a professor at Punjab University and Delhi School of Economics and was elected as the Economic Affairs Officer for the United Nations Conference from 1966 to 1969. In 1971, he was made Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and in 1972 he was made Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance. After this, he became the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission and was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India between 1982 and 1985. He has also been the Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the University Grants Commission. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha during the Vajpayee government between 1998 and 2004 and also contested the Lok Sabha elections from Delhi in 1999. He was the Finance Minister in PM Narasimha Rao's government between 1991 and 1996 and as the Prime Minister between 2004 and 2014... He completed a 10-year term as the country's first Sikh Prime Minister. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1987, Asia Money Award in 1993 and 1994 as the best Finance Minister and Euro Money Award in 1993 as the best Finance Minister.
Family
Dr Manmohan Singh's family consists of his wife Gursharan Kaur and three daughters. He always appeared calm and used to say that silence is better than thousands of answers. Which he is trying himself. Even during his tenure as Prime Minister, he used to keep Maruti 800 in his residence and always got his speeches written in Urdu. He also apologized in Parliament for the Sikh riots. Everyone is convinced of this today.
7 days of national mourning
The central government has declared seven days of national mourning on the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan. After which the national flag of Rashtrapati Bhavan was flown at half-mast.
