The Election Commission has requested the deployment of 150 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) in West Bengal ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. Nearly 100 companies are expected to move to the state by the end of the week, with an additional 50 companies scheduled to be sent in the second week of March. These deployments are part of a total of 1,500 companies set to be deployed across various states during the Lok Sabha elections. The decision comes in light of past incidents of violence in the state during elections, including the Panchayat elections in 2023, which left more than 40 people dead. Both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP have submitted evidence of violence, requesting the Election Commission for free and fair elections. The poll body is prepared with Plan B in case of any violence during the elections and has vowed to take stringent action against any party or individual found involved in violent activities.
